Médoc Marathon: The World's Longest Marathon, Where the Aid Station Serves Wine

Around 20 grand cru tastings, oysters, a steak, and almost the whole field in costume. At the Médoc Marathon, the 42.195 km are real, but the finish time comes second to everything else.

01“The longest marathon in the world”

That's the house slogan, and it's only half a lie. Not in kilometers: the 42.195 km are officially measured. In duration, because people take their time. Created in 1984 according to its organizers, the Médoc starts and finishes in Pauillac, with a 6 hr 30 min time limit. Entries are capped at 8,500 participants, and the field comes from everywhere: 76 nationalities at the 2025 start according to France 3, 72 in 2026 according to ici (formerly France Bleu).

02Wine at the aid station (yes, really)

The châteaux play along: the organizer announces about 20 grand cru tasting points, “in moderate doses,” as the Médoc Atlantique tourist office puts it. How many châteaux does the course pass? 44 according to France 3, “more than 50” according to the organizer. You don't have to taste, and you're wise to hydrate with water: the rules themselves remind you that alcohol abuse is dangerous to your health.

No check, just crates.

03Oysters, steak and ice cream

Oysters, ham, steak, cheese, ice cream: the list of gourmet stops comes from the organizer itself, and the tourist office adds grapes. When your legs start to ache, the steak becomes a very serious motivational argument. And all along the way, music: “multiple orchestras,” the organizer promises.

04The theme of the year

The vast majority of runners run in costume: at least 80% of the field according to France 3, more than 90% according to the organizer. Each year has a theme: the sea in 2025 (per France 3), the 1980s for the 40th edition in 2026, and “… Conquering the World!” for the 41st, on September 4, 2027. Put one on: otherwise you'll be the only one who looks odd.

05The prize: your weight in wine

The rules award the male and female winners their weight in wine. No check, just crates. A race where the clock comes after the smile. Humor yes, excess no: you run, you taste in moderation, and you get home without driving.
